In the film, the character Celie who is played by Fantasia Barrino, has a relationship with Shug Avery who is played by Taraji P Henson and the two share a kiss and is suggested to have had relations. The 2023 version appears to be more mild in regards to shedding light on Shug and Celie’s relationship compared to the 1985 film that displayed their sexual nature.
